As Ahmad mentioned last update, we sat down with Shaykh Ramzy Ajem and Shaykh Zahir Bacchus to ask them some questions that were really off-the-cuff. I don’t know about you, but I find it kind of frightening to think of questions on the fly. Most of the questions were about education, the Essentials Program, and the history of the Toronto Muslim community.

For those who haven’t heard Shaykh Zahir before, you’ll probably figure out by watching the video that his style of delivery is quite different from Shaykh Ramzy. Whenever we asked Shaykh Zahir a question he just went off for about twenty solid minutes until we fired off the next question.

Personally, I think any of his responses would have been great candidates for “Khutbah of the Year” had he said them on a mimbar. Luckily for us, we were able to catch a couple of minutes on his response about the importance of Islamic scholarship (fitting with Habib Umar coming to town next week)

What do you look for in a scholar of Islam? Why do you follow the scholars you follow?

What are some important lessons scholars have taught you recently?

Last month, we shot a video for The Essentials Program with some of Qurba’s teachers and students. We wanted to keep it real — nothing scripted, nothing rehearsed. So we didn’t tell them what the video would be about, they just showed up and we started asking questions.

As we got into it, our conversation with Shaykh Ramzy Ajem and Shaykh Zahir Bacchus got very interesting. We didn’t really have a list of questions we wanted to ask — we just went with the flow and let the discussion guide itself.

We asked them questions about knowledge, its importance, how to seek it, and how to overcome some of the challenges we face as students. Needless to say, their answers were extremely inspiring and thought-provoking.

We put together a short clip from that conversation of Shaykh Ramzy talking about the benefits of knowledge: confidence, purpose, and clarity.

Watch the video and share your thoughts in the comments below. Has your pursuit of knowledge led to an increase in confidence, purpose, and clarity?
